たつ【断つ･絶つ】

1 【断つ】 〔切り離す〕 cut off; sever; chop off; 〔遮断する〕 cut off; shut off; interrupt; stop; 〔好きなものをやめる〕 abstain 《from fish and flesh》; give up [leave off] 《drinking》; for(e)go 《alcohol》; deny oneself 《a pleasure》.

●剣で結び目を断つ cut the knot with a sword

・電流を断つ switch off the electricity [an electric current]

・ネットワークとの接続を断つ break the connection with the network

・補給路を断つ cut off [interrupt] a supply route

・橋が流されて, その村への交通が断たれた. The bridges were swept away and the village was cut off [became inaccessible].

2 【絶つ･断つ】 〔途切れさせる〕 break (off); cut (off); sever; shut off; (続けることをやめる) discontinue; (間を遮る) interrupt; 〔終わらせる〕 stop; finish; bring sth to an end [a close]; 〔根絶する〕 exterminate; extirpate; eradicate; suppress; stamp out.

●石油の供給が絶たれた. Oil supplies have been cut off. | No more oil is getting through.

・学資を絶つ stop paying 《a child's》 (school) fees; refuse to continue financing 《a student's》 education

・実家からの仕送りが絶たれた. My parents have stopped sending me money. | I'm not getting money from my parents any more.

・連絡を絶つ cut off communications (with sb); stop communicating (with sb); 〔行方不明になる〕 disappear; vanish; go missing
